And when they are looking for funny t-shirts, they will go first to your store. It means when people think of funny t-shirts, they think of you. If people know your store as вЂњthe funny t-shirt storeвЂќ (even though itвЂ™s not your storeвЂ™s name) you are a winner. The most powerful concept in marketing is owning a word in the peopleвЂ™s mind. Product qualityвЂ™s perception will be more influenced by your store decoration and your merchandising display than by the product itself. And how do you change their perception? By changing things like store decoration, shopping bags, gift bags, price tags, window display, and so on. What mattersВ is your customerвЂ™s perception. They cannot understand why there are other competitors that seem to have much more clients than they have, despite having worse products and higher prices. Some retailers think the best way to be successful is to have the best products at the best prices. This is the most important Law of MarketingВ for retailers. Marketing is not a battle of products, itвЂ™s a battle of perception. Now itвЂ™s much easier to market to the right audience. Now you can say: weвЂ™re the best apparel retailer for young men starting their career and working at the office. And better salespersons.Дo you think people will notice? Probably not.Д«ut suppose you say: now IвЂ™m going to sell classic apparel (suits, shirts) to young men starting their career вЂ“ people who never bought a suit. Suppose you sell menвЂ™s apparel, but in your town you have other retailers selling the same stuff to the same people you sell. Many retailers think they can beat competition by being better at some category, but the truth is, itвЂ™s much easier if you can find a new category you can compete. If you canвЂ™t be first in a category, set up a new category you can be first in. 10 Laws of Marketing for Retailers вЂњThe Law of CategoryвЂќ The ones I think are more relevant for retailers. So, letвЂ™s look at 10 of these called вЂњlawsвЂќ. Some of these вЂњlawsвЂќ can be applied to the retail sector. Most of these ideas are strategic marketing. The book has some interesting ideas that can be used by retailers. You can invest your time in so many more relevant books.The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing is a book written by Al Ries and Jack Trout. If you read it, you wonвЂ™t regret it because itвЂ™s well written, but donвЂ™t go ahead and buy it. But itвЂ™s old, the examples are outdated, and so many of the Immutable Laws have been disproven by the Internet. After reading it, I wanted to start a new marketing campaign. The book focuses on the marketing strategies of the big companies of the era. The book claims that their marketing laws are Immutable, but a lot has changed since they wrote the book and many of those laws have been successfully broken. The book was published in 1993, before the era of the Internet. During that time I read The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing by Al Ries and Jack Trout. I recently jumped into a plane Montreal-San Jose Costa Rica and then back.
